Yoga Basics 1 – Yoga’s Ancient Roots – Where It Began

Hello,

In our first YOGA BASIC SESSION, we will explore The Ancient Roots of Yoga.

Did you know this living philosophy originated over 5,000 years ago? It was first passed down orally and comes from the spiritual teachings of the Rig Veda.

One of the key texts that shaped its development is the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, written around the 2nd century BCE. Patanjali outlined the “Eight Limbs of Yoga,” a system that includes ethical precepts, physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation techniques, providing a framework for personal and spiritual growth.

Today, yoga is a booming industry, worth USD 107.1 billion in 2024 and still growing! Crazy, right?

But let’s return to the roots.

A student asked the guru, “What’s the goal of yoga?”
The guru smiled, poured water into a full cup, and it overflowed.
“To find peace,” he said, “first, empty what you don’t need.”

With my background in physical therapy, I noticed a real difference when I started practicing yoga. Moving with the breath in yoga helped me feel more connected within body and mind

The number one rule for your yoga practice is to respect your current abilities and practice within your limits. This principle of self-respect and self-awareness guides practitioners on their journey toward physical and spiritual well-being.

The essence of yoga serves as a timeless bridge between ancient wisdom and contemporary living, offering a pathway to unite in harmony.

Come and join our Yoga Basics course every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 AM, in Caldas da Rainha – Sociedade Columbófila Caldense.

I am looking forward welcoming you on the Yoga Mat!
