Did you know that an adult at rest typically breathes around 12 to 20 times per minute? That’s approximately 22,000 breaths a day!
Breathing isn’t just a simple bodily function—it’s what keeps you- us alive.
Your lungs play an important role in this process, providing your body with the oxygen it needs to function. With every inhale, your lungs draw in air, extracting oxygen and delivering it to your bloodstream. From there, it’s transported to every cell in your body, fueling each step you take, word you speak, and is with you in every minute of your live.
The awareness and guidance of the breath during your yoga practice are significant differences compared to other sports.
Coming from a background in physical therapy and participating in multiple sports growing up, I’ve truly noticed a difference. The body’s functions are set. For example, lifting your arm in activities like body pump, ballet or simply waving “Hello” involves the same functional movement.
But in Yoga, your coordinating movement with breath, you focus on the movement and intention behind each action, fostering awareness.
In essence, breathing isn’t just something we do—it’s what fuels us, sustaining our lives day in and day out. So, let’s take a moment to appreciate the incredible power of something as simple and fundamental as breathing.
