Yoga Basics #5: Twists – Awaken, Balance, Renew

Twisting poses in yoga are often underestimated, because they hold incredible power to refresh the body, center the mind, and support long-term wellness. .

Why Twists Matter Twists, called counter poses. They help bring the body back into balance, especially after forward or backward bends. They are not only physically beneficial but also energetically cleansing.

The Key Benefits of Twisting Poses

  • Digestive Support and Detoxification:
Twists gently massage the abdominal organs by following the natural motion of the intestines. This aids digestion, supports detoxification, and can help you feel lighter and more balanced.
  • Spinal Mobility and Nervous System Activation:
Twisting promotes healthy movement of the spine and circulation between the intervertebral discs. This helps prevent stiffness and supports spinal health over time. Twists also stimulate the nervous system, leaving you feeling both refreshed and grounded.

The Core Principles of Twisting

To practice twists safely and effectively, it’s essential to follow a few key principles.

  • Maintain a Long Spine: Keep your back upright and your chest lifted. This avoids compressing the spinal discs and allows the twist to work its magic.
  • Elevate the Hips: Use a folded blanket or cushion to lift your seat. This supports better alignment of the pelvis and lower back, especially in seated poses.
  • Twist from the Core: Initiate the movement from the thoracic spine (mid-back), rather than pulling with your shoulders or cranking your neck. This protects your spine and allows a deeper, more integrated twist.
  • Let Your Heart Lead: Approach the pose with intention and gentleness. Don’t force the movement—let the openness come from within, guided by your breath and awareness.

Types of Twists:

Twists can vary in energy and effect, depending on how they’re practiced:

  • Standing Twists:
These are stimulating and warming. They help activate your inner fire (Agni), improve circulation, and build strength. Standing twists are especially useful for energizing the body and sharpening mental focus.
  • Seated or Lying Twists:
These are more grounding and restorative. They calm the nervous system, support deep breathing, and are often used at the end of a practice to help the body unwind and regenerate.

Twists are a simple but powerful part of yoga. When done with care and proper alignment, they bring energy, balance, and healing to the body and mind. Whether you’re relaxing in a seated twist or building strength in a standing one, remember the basics: keep your spine long, twist from your center, and move with your heart and breath.
