The Power of Chanting “Om” (Aum)

Chanting “Om” (also spelled “Aum”) is one of the oldest spiritual practices. Many describe Om as the “Sound of the Universe,” used in meditation and yoga to promote calm, focus, and awareness. But beyond its spiritual meaning, modern science has begun to explore how this simple sound affects the brain and body.

Neurological Effects
Brain imaging studies show that chanting Om can calm the limbic system – the area responsible for stress, fear, and emotions, while stimulating the vagus nerve to activate the body’s “rest and digest” state.

As a result, you may experience:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Better emotional balance
  • Improved focus and clarity

Some studies have also shown that repetitive chanting can shift the brain into relaxed states, producing alpha waves similar to those seen during meditation.

I’ve seen this with my own kids and others : if a baby or child is crying, hold them in your arms and chant “Om.” It’s amazing to watch what happens!

From a scientific perspective, chanting Om combines three elements:

The Physical Benefits
The vibration actually creates this soothing sensation in your chest and head and support also your  physical well-being.

  • You may notice your heart rate slow and your blood pressure drop
  • Your breathing becomes deeper and more efficient
  • Your muscles begin to relax
  • You feel a growing sense of calm and ease

This week, we’ll combine our Asana practice with the chant of Om. Chanting Om it’s a simple practice with real benefits for your mind and body.

I also want to share with you this YouTube video from Sadhguru so you can practice and chant AUM together at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olbWsMqQZHQ
