At the beginning of my journey as a yoga teacher, I came across a small cast-iron statue of Ganesha. Since then, he has become a kind of guardian who peacefully joins me in almost every yoga session, standing quietly at the side and watching over the practice.
Today, I would like to share the beautiful Story of Ganesha with you.

The story begins with Ganesha’s mother, Parvati, the goddess of love, devotion, and strength
One day, Parvati wanted to take a bath in peace. To make sure no one disturbed her, she made a young boy from sandalwood paste and sacred earth. Then she breathed life into him. The boy became her son, and she named him Ganesha.
Before she went inside, Parvati asked Ganesha to guard the door and not let anyone enter.
A short time later, Shiva, Parvati’s husband and one of the main gods in Hinduism, returned home. Ganesha had never seen Shiva before, so he did not know who he was. Remembering his mother’s instructions, he politely but firmly refused to let Shiva enter.
Shiva was surprised that a young boy would stop him. When Ganesha continued to protect the door, a battle began between Ganesha and Shiva’s attendants. Ganesha fought with great courage. In a moment of anger, Shiva struck off Ganesha’s head.
When Parvati came out and saw what had happened, she was heartbroken. She told Shiva that Ganesha was her son. Shiva immediately realized his mistake and promised to bring Ganesha back to life.

He told his attendants to find the first living creature sleeping with its head facing north, a direction that is considered sacred in Hindu tradition. They found a young elephant. Shiva gently placed the elephant’s head on Ganesha’s body, and by his divine power, Ganesha came back to life.
To make up for what had happened, Shiva gave Ganesha a great honor. He made him the leader of his heavenly companions and the protector of all people. From that day on, Ganesha became known as the Remover of Obstacles, the Bringer of Wisdom and Good Fortune, and the God of New Beginnings.
Today, people pray to Ganesha before starting something important. They believe he removes obstacles, brings good luck, and gives wisdom and strength.
Let Ganesha’s wisdom become part of your Yoga practice this week. As you move, breathe, and find stillness, invite strength, wisdom and courage.
Come and join Yoga Caldas da Rainha every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:00 am.
I look forward to practicing with you! Namaste, Andrea
